Shigenobu was a painter who also designed many woodblock prints. The forty-one pictures of flowers and (or) birds shown in this gallery were published in an 1856 picture book entitled Yanagawa Gafu KachÅ Bu (i.e., Picture Album by Yanagawa Flower and Bird Part). Click on a picture to enlarge it. The flowers and birds were outlined in black and all were colored using the same, limited range of colors (i.e., blue, pink, grey). This style of printmaking was often used in the 1800s to provide an inexpensive form of visual entertainment for Japanese city dwellers. To see a gallery with larger pictures click here.
